CAMP LA JUNTA

Camp La Junta Policies, Rules and Procedures

Camp is just around the corner and we want to take this opportunity to let you know we are looking forward to another fantastic summer. As we are busy putting the finishing touches on all the winter's construction projects and the summer's staff selection, we feel it's a good time to pass along 75 years of experience regarding summer policies, procedures and helpful hints. There are several items and reminders -- new for 2003 -- we would like for you to note, so please read everything carefully (even you veterans)!

OPENING DAY

ARRIVAL: ALL Terms: All campers please arrive between 2:00 and 3:00 P.M. Final preparations and meals are taking place before arrival. A busy opening day schedule begins promptly at 3:00. Please do not arrive early. Please don't stay late.

Upon arrival at camp you will be given instructions for check-in. Opening Day can be a time of excitement or of difficult adjustment for your son. We recommend that you plan only a brief and positive stay to make the adjustment easier. "Short and sweet" is best -- don't linger or dwell on good-byes. Let your son and his counselor make his bed as you are leaving.

MEDICATIONS: Be sure when packing to make medications readily accessible as all medications must go directly to the Infirmary upon arrival at Camp. This includes all prescription and nonprescription medicine that your child is bringing and is accustomed to taking. Please pack a sufficient supply to last the term. Please send medication for occasional ailments, such as asthma, as well. It's best to be overcautious. We also recommend dropping off extra glasses and contact lenses at the infirmary (this way someone knows for sure if the backups are used/needed).

CAMP STORE: The camp store will be open on arrival dates for parents purchasing La Junta clothing and at other times throughout the term.  Parents of campers arriving by special transportation should furnish the camp IN ADVANCE with an itemized list of needed purchases. All charges will be totaled for parents' payment on Closing Day.

Store merchandise includes La Junta clothing, laundry and duffle bags, flashlights, stationery and stamps. All purchases will be charged to a camper's account to be paid for on Closing Day. We make every effort to see that campers do not overbuy and keep prices very reasonable. Unless otherwise instructed, we will limit each boy's purchases to a modest amount. Please coach your son on his limit before arriving at camp, and call us if you wish to set a specific spending limit (most boys can easily survive on about $100.00). Other necessities, such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and other personal items, will be available should campers lose or use up what they bring to camp. Snacks, awards, laundry and activity charges are all included in your tuition fee. Campers will not need cash for any reason while at camp.

MEDICAL EXPENSES/INSURANCE: Although we are not financially responsible for illnesses and injuries which occur while you son is at camp, we do provide a medical/accident policy for your son which will cover, with no deductible, $750.00 of medical and $2500.00 of accident coverage (this should offset any family deductibles).  You must notify our office if you wish to decline this insurance policy. A space for this purpose is provided on the Health Form, or you may simply call our office. In the event of such illness or injury, parents will be notified promptly by the camp and appropriate insurance paperwork will be filed by our office.  Parents are responsible for all expenses not covered by this policy.

MAIL FROM HOME: Pony Express time is very important to all the boys, so please write often to let your son know you are thinking of him. Tell him the news from home, but be positive, trying not to write anything that may disturb him or cause him to become homesick. Include his CABIN NUMBER in his address as this facilitates the sorting of mail (his cabin number will be furnished on opening day). Feel free to fax (830/238-4888) or e.mail messages to your son via the Bunk1 link on our website.  www.lajunta.com   These too, will be delivered daily after lunch by Pony Express.

PACKAGES: In recent years, the amount of packages received by campers has been so overwhelming that they have at times been more of a detriment to the boys than a boost. PLEASE LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PACKAGES SENT TO YOUR CAMPER TO ONE or TWO. NO CANDY, FOOD, CHEWING GUM, etc. is allowed outside of what the camp provides. Campers are given three balanced meals, a morning cookie break, and a mid-afternoon snack each day and a bedtime snack every other night. We also provide snacks on campouts and special trips which makes plenty of goodies for everyone. DO NOT SEND ANYTHING FOR THE BOYS TO EAT!
