What
is La Junta?
Camp La Junta is a private, traditional, recreational, overnight camp
for boys offering four-week or two-week sessions. Situated on 200
acres of scenic Texas Hill Country, alongside a mile of the crystal
clear, spring fed Guadalupe River, our summer program was developed to
allow boys to participate in a variety of exciting activities which
broaden their experiences and cultivate a strong sense of success and
self-confidence. Campers select the ten activities which they wish
to participate and each has his own unique activity schedule.
Staff Facts:

Typical cabins house 8-12 kids with 2-3 counselors.
·
Enrollment is limited to 250 boys per session, aged 7-14.
·
There are around 60 La Junta counselors total.
·
Up to 6 counselors are female.
·
Each summer, we hire approximately 15-20 new staff
members.
·
La Junta also hires nannies, nurses, office staff,
maintenance and kitchen personnel.
Our goal in the summer is to provide a
dynamic work experience which rivals the excitement and life experience

What do counselors do at
CLJ?
All La Junta counselors are hired to be both Cabin Counselors and
Activity Instructors. This tandem responsibility level gives each staff
member diversity in their daily schedule and interactions. Taking on
these two jobs require you to function as a coach, role model, parent,
teacher, big brother or sister, super hero, and best friend.
As a cabin counselor, you will be assigned at least one co-counselor and
eight to twelve campers. You are responsible for their happiness,
healthy, hygiene, safety, supervision, and success. Cabin duties include
supervising cabin clean-up, rest periods, showers, and all meals.
Each camper has a unique activity schedule during the day, and the job
of a cabin counselor changes to instruction as you teach your assigned
activity six days a week. Activity instructors can tailor their classes
to manufacture their own brand of fun based on their personality and
experiences. In addition to teaching, instructors must record, monitor,
and motivate the success of their campers.
In the evenings, counselors "team teach" special events such
as all camp games, relays, campfires, competitions and camp-outs.
Through all these assignments, a counselor's overall goal is to see that
every boy leaves camp with a feeling of success, pride, confidence,
independence, security and entertainment.
Female staff have virtually the same daily schedule and responsibility
of male staff. All are assigned a cabin and activity and treat it
as their own. All female counselors are housed together in the
“Girl's Cottage,” but are there to tuck their cabin in each night
and wake them up in the morning.

So I want to work at camp— what are the requirements?
Our summer focus is most definitely on the kids. Therefore, our
ideal staff member makes common-sense decisions, communicates well, has
energy, enthusiasm and an interest in the needs of young boys.
Our ideal staff member is a mature counselor, with a sincere concern for
young people, necessary to guide each boy in the proper direction for a
great, learning summer.
Our ideal counselor is prepared to exert constant effort so that his
guidance and example are consistent and instill a strong and lasting
foundation of self-pride and confidence in each camper.
Our ideal counselors traditionally fit the "All-American" mold
— clean cut, moral, hard working, high aspiring, young adults whom our
parents can confidently count on as safe, stable friends and admirable
role models for their sons.

The Benefits of Being A Counselor
Counselors at La Junta are among the best trained, treated,
remunerated and skilled staff in the nation.
Staff members receive a professional, five day leadership training. We
impart and then count on important lifetime leadership skills and
successful corporate management skills to run our camp and train our
campers, and want you to have them for the rest of your professional and
academic career as well. Diverse management techniques are high on
our list of priorities to teach during staff week. You'll also
learn state of the art parenting skills, leadership fundamentals, public
speaking, time management, conflict resolution, problem solving,
creative instructional techniques, lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid and
recreational facilitation.
We desire professional attitudes and professional skills, so we train
and reinforce both throughout the summer. Our goal is to prepare
you better for life as well as summer camp.
In addition to the great professional benefits, each member of the
counselor staff also receives:
- Time off: specifically, every other
evening and afternoon. Because we expect you to perform at the
highest standard all summer long, time off keeps you in touch with
the outside world and cultivate friendships with your summer peers.
- Monetary compensation: a starting
pay of $1,100.00 for the camping season, which runs roughly June
1-August 1. Salary increases are based upon age, experience, and
specialized training. Staff aged 20 and over receive a minimum of
$1,300.00 for the eight weeks of camp. Travel allowances are
provided for out-of-state staff. Professionals (i.e. nurses) can
expect even more. A copy of your salary scale will be made available
to you after an employment application is completed.
