Food Service Jobs at La Junta
Working at Camp La Junta is a great experience regardless of the
position. We feel most staff benefit as much as
our campers. You should know up front, however, that the days are long and
the summer is hot. We work hard and play hard, and the experience,
the facilities, and the company you keep are excellent.
Each summer we hire about three kitchen assistants or interns and a head
cook to work alongside our ARAMARK kitchen manager. Our kitchen
staff are employed by Camp but work directly with and for our ARAMARK
management company ensuring the best kitchen environment and experience
possible.
Kitchen assistants and interns are hired to support the head cook. They
will be asked to assist with food preparation, serving, cleanup, and
inventory. It is understood that their skills will increase as the
summer goes along. Their responsibilities will NOT normally include
washing dishes, mopping the dining hall or waiting on tables.
However, as the camp is a family, period excitement can be generated
when one of the cooks delivers a special desert to their favorite table.
Usually, kitchen staff are housed on the camp grounds. Eventually if
they request it, they can be placed with campers, but most often, they
will live in on-site staff housing immediately adjacent to the
Dining Hall.
While hired primary for supporting duties, all Kitchen Staff are
expected to live up to the same high standards of responsibility and
leadership maintained by our counseling staff when interacting with
campers. Our entire staff's overall goal is to see that every boy
leaves camp with a feeling of success, pride, confidence, independence,
security and entertainment. We expect that whenever possible all
support staff support help boost campers and certainly never interfere with these ideals.
If you are self-motivated, prepared with skills for a fast-paced food
service environment, committed to excellence, a top achiever, enjoy the
outdoors, working around kids, living in a close knit community and are
interested in joining the best summer staff on the planet, consider Camp
La Junta
Requirements for Food Service Jobs
Our summer focus is most definitely on the kids. Although our
kitchen staff are not here solely to work with kids, they will be
exposed to many aspects of camp life, and will come in constant contact
with the kids in the dining hall and around camp. Therefore, our
ideal staff member makes common sense decisions, communicates well with
others, has energy, enthusiasm and an interest in the needs of young
boys.
We pride ourselves on serving high quality, kid-friendly meals. We
desire to keep every boy healthy and well fed in order to get the most
out of his camp experience. We strive for constant improvement and
innovation. Therefore our ideal staff member is mature, hard
working, positive and looking to go the extra mile. Consistent
effort is required, so that a staff member's performance and example to
others are persistent, instilling a strong foundation of pride.
All of our staff members traditionally fit the "All-American"
mold: clean, moral, hard working, high aspiring, young adults whom our
parents can confidently count on as safe, stable, and potential role
models for their sons. This goes for support staff as well.
Your selection of appearance and attitude will influence our campers
throughout the summer.
Because we are a community geared around our long term success, specific
experience and food service certifications are not as important to us as
the desire to learn and the will to succeed. While food service
experience is an important factor in assuring you know what the summer
experience will be like, lack of experience does not disqualify your
application.
If you are hard working and looking for a position which recognizes and
rewards that effort, please read on.
Benefits for Food Service Staff
At Camp La Junta we value our support staff and strive to assure that
they are among the best trained, supported, treated, remunerated and
skilled staff in the camping community. Kitchen Staff generally
have more physically demanding job assignments than our counselor staff,
but are offered additional compensation and an opportunity to
participate in camp activities during free time.
All support staff members will receive ongoing training throughout the
summer, especially during the first week of camp and staff training
week. We count on important life-time skills and successful
corporate skills to run our camp and train our kids and want you to have
them for the rest of your professional and academic career as well.
We want professional attitudes and professional skills, so we train and
reinforce both throughout the summer.
- Time off: In addition to the great
professional benefits, each member of the support staff will receive
every evening and most mid-mornings and afternoons off. Time off
generally follows responsibilities and not the clock, so as the
summer progresses and your skills improve, so too will your free
time. This time ensures that you remain rested and able to
perform at the highest standard, keeps you in touch with the outside
world and allows time to cultivate relationships with your summer
peers from around the state, nation and the world.
- Within a
well defined structure, support staff are encouraged to participate
in camp activities to enhance their personal experience, to build
relationships and to add to our campers experiences.
- La Junta maintains a staff lounge
with games, video, computers, TV and air conditioning.
- Salary: If all this weren't enough,
support staff are actually remunerated with at least $1000.00 per
month for the camping season (roughly June 1 - August 10). Actual
salaries are based upon age, work experience and specialized
training. Travel allowances to camp are provided to out of state
staffers.
Equally important, there are no fees or
other purchase requirements for staff members. There is no staff
uniform to purchase. Comfortable shorts and tee shirts suffice for most
of your stay at La Junta. We'll provide a staff shirt for opening
and closing days. There are abundant (and free) laundry facilities
on camp. Daily snacks, provided to the campers, are provided to
all staff at no charge. All meals are included for support staff as
well. All staff are provided insurance to cover routine
medications and most medical treatment.
Also, when your La Junta summer is over, you will share in many of the
same successes and memories afforded our campers. You'll have dozens of
great photos for your wall, addresses of some of your new closest
friends, a great tan and an arsenal of enhanced lifetime skills. You'll
have mastered leadership, communication, organizational and
instructional skills. You'll have perfected your public speaking and
riverside exploring skills. Most of all, the sweat, determination,
dedication and affection you give our program and the 600 kids this
summer, will be paid back 10 fold throughout the rest of your days. What
are you waiting for?
