Counselor Job Description

All of Camp La Junta's Counselor Staff are hired to be both Cabin Counselors and Activity Instructors. We feel this is the ideal responsibility level, giving you diversity in daily schedule and your relationships over the summer.  Over the course of the summer you will function as a coach, role model, parent, teacher, big brother/sister, super hero and best friend.

All Counselors are assigned a cabin with at least one co-counselor and 8 - 12 campers for whom they are responsible for happiness, health, hygiene, safety, supervision and success.  Among their cabin duties,  counselors are asked to perform the daily functions of family, friend, referee, counselor, entertainer and program director.  When on duty, counselors supervise their cabins at cleanup, rest period, showers and meals.  The cabin unit forges a special bond over their camp session.  Going different directions during the day, increases the chances of a successful experience for everyone.

All Counselors instruct five 50 minute activity periods each day in an activity area that matches their skills and interests.  In their activity they are responsible for instruction, inventory, records and programming.  The have the freedom to create their own brand of fun, based on their experiences and personality.  Counselors are also responsible for recording, monitoring and motivating the success of the campers in their activity.

Surely a highlight of the day, all on-duty counselors assist with the planning and implementation of the evening program. In the evenings, counselors "team teach" special events such as all camp games, relays, campfires, competitions and campouts.

Through all these assignments, a Counselor's overall goal is to see that every boy leaves camp with a feeling of success, pride, confidence, independence, security and entertainment.

Female staff have virtually the same daily schedule and responsibility of male staff.  All are assigned a cabin and activity and treat it as their own.  All female counselors are housed in the camp's "cottage", but there to tuck their kids in each night and wake them up in the morning.

If you are interested in working with young people this summer, have an activity background which you feel comfortable teaching and enjoy the outdoors, then a summer at La Junta is the perfect summer job for you.
